Overhead Crane Technician-in-Training - Level I
This introductory course will cover the basic aspects of bridge cranes, electronics, and motors. We will lay the foundation and begin building the knowledge and skills of the overhead crane technician. Hands-on exercises and labs with various pieces of equipment including pendants, magnetic contactors, remote control systems, and more are prominent in the course.
Time spent on an actual overhead crane is included. Quizzes are administered throughout, as well as a written and practical examination to ensure proper understanding and comprehension. This course meets/exceeds OSHA, ASME, and CMAA standards.

Course Outline
- Overhead crane components
- Unified terms and definitions
- Basics of electricity
- Electrical components including motors, brakes, transformers, contactors, and more
- Magnetic circuits including pendant integration, limit switches, and more
- Applicable Federal, State, and Provincial Regulations and Standards
Upon Completion
Each student that completes the full 2-day course will receive 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Once the exams are successfully completed, the student will receive a certification.
Written and practical exams are administered to test the student’s knowledge and comprehension of the material presented. Participants who successfully pass the exams are issued a two-year Level I Overhead Crane Technician-in-Training Certification.
All ITI Training Center Open Enrollment Students will receive the following student materials:
- Overhead Crane Technician Student Workbook
- Rigging Gear Inspection Reference Card
- Overhead Crane Technician Reference Card
PPE Information
The following PPE is required for all hands-on sessions at ITI Training Centers:
- OSHA-approved hard hat*
- Eye protection*
- Long pants with no holes or tears
- Low-heeled work boots or work shoes
- Full-fingered work gloves*
- OSHA-approved safety vest*
*ITI Training Centers will make these PPE items available for all enrolled students. Students are responsible for their own appropriate garments and footwear.
Overhead Crane Technician-in-Training Students should bring the following tools with them if possible:
- Multimeter
- Wire Stripper
- Terminal Crimper

Each participant will receive a Overhead Crane Technician Student Workbook, Rigging Gear Inspection Reference Card, Overhead Crane Technician Reference Card
Primarily classroom based sessions with some interactive workshops.
