ITI's Rigging Gear Inspector Course Hits the Road

ITI's Rigging Gear Inspector program is going on tour! Okay, we’re not actually taking the whole course on the road. But did you know that students who take part in the course at our Washington and Ohio locations can actually take part in a forging facility tour? More on that in a second. First let's explore the class and its relevance to riggers and supervisors.

rgi tour in action

ITI’s Rigging Gear Inspector – Level I Course is designed to develop and strengthen worker skills, preparing class participants to become qualified, in-house rigging gear inspectors. The course itself features in-depth classroom instruction along with various hands-on inspection activities where participants learn the removal criteria for wire rope, wire rope slings, synthetic web and round slings, chain slings, rigging hardware, and below-the-hook lifting devices. All removal criteria is taught in compliance with applicable federal and provincial regulations, as well as ASME standards.

The Rigging Gear Inspector program is ideal for anyone already performing rigging inspection for an employer as well as for supervisors whose responsibility it is to ensure the quality of rigging gear in facility. Crane maintenance personnel also find this course to be highly applicable as they engage in the inspection of running and standing ropes, sheaves, drums, and associated equipment as a part of regularly scheduled equipment reviews.

So how about that tour we mentioned?

Those attending Rigging Gear Inspector I at ITI's WA or OH Training Centers, who are looking to take their experience to the next level, have the option to take part in a local forging facility tour. Attendees will see the manufacturing of shackles, wire rope slings, and other rigging hardware. During the tour, students also witness what happens when rigging hardware is pushed beyond its intended limits as they participate in testbed activities and wire rope socketing demonstrations.

Those who complete the course earn 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), as well as a certificate of completion. At the close of the course, written exams are administered and participants perform hands-on inspections of used and damaged gear to test their knowledge of the criteria learned. Participants who successfully pass the exams are issued a three-year Level I Qualification.
