OSHA has cited Harrison Hoist of Grand Prairie, Texas with six serious safety violations for the fatal tower crane collapse at the University of Texas in July and is proposing $29,400 in fines.

Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has posted on its website a letter of interpretation, clarifying whether or not a practical test is required for recertification of crane operators. The letter from
James G. Maddux, OSHA’s Director of the Directorate of Construction, was in response to a question posed by
James Callahan, General President of the
International Union of Operating Engineers.

WASHINGTON – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today issued a direct final rule and notice of proposed rulemaking that applies the requirements of the August 2010 cranes and derricks in construction standard to demolition work and underground construction. The application of this rule will protect workers from hazards associated with hoisting equipment used during construction activities.
